Every party has racists of every kind. However, when someone of leadership in a party feels it is just funny to stereotype any group it becomes abhorrent. Many leaders in other parties have made insensitive remarks before. Generally they make an issue to publicly atone. The Republican leadership is a different specie. They make no apologies for their racism or insensitivities.

The Republican Party for all practical purposes is now a regional and marginalized Party in the Deep South East and a very few heartland states. Most “independents”, people with liberal democratic ideals that refuse to identify themselves as Democrats, have jumped ship as indicated by Chuck Todd’s excellent piece here.

The current Republican Party is Sarah Palin’s party. It is the party whose attributes are racist, non-informed, ill-informed, and not very interested in being informed. This is dangerous not because the party is now a party of crackpots. It is dangerous because without the check of an intelligent opposition, complacency by the dominant party takes hold which intern brings us back to bad policies of a different kind.
